We Irishmen are being labelled the ugliest in the world after a dating site rejects more of our applications than those from anywhere else (apart from Poland).

The fact that beauty is only skin deep is of little consolation if you're blocked from hooking up with hotties online - a situation that a huge percentage of Irish men are having to face after being rejected from dating site beautifulpeople.com.

More than a million people worldwide are signed up to possibly the smuggest site on the web. Unlike man other dating sites which promise to find you a match, beautifulpeople.com will only accept you if the people already on the site vote you worthy of joining the ranks of those already there.

But of the million 'beautiful people' on the site, few are Irish men. Figures released by the site claim that only 9 per cent of Irish men who apply get through, putting us joint last along with Polish men.

At the other end of the scale, you're five times more likely to be considered handsome if you're a Brazilain (45 per cent accepted). Forty per cent of Danes are accepted, as are 39 per cent of Italians.

Overall 25 per cent of all men who apply get through - making it look really bad for us.

Irish women fair better on the site, with 20 per cent acceptance. This puts them ahead of the Germans and Brits, although they're a long way behind Swedish women with their whopping 68 per cent acceptance rate.

So Swedish women are considered attractive. Not exactly a shock there.

But back to us men. According to beautifulpeople.com spokeswoman Miki Haines-Sanger “It would help if Irish men stopped sending in photos of themselves that they have taken in the pub. And they should consider a bit of a makeover before submitting their profile photos.

“I’m sure there are a lot of beautiful Irish men out there but maybe they’re just not applying to join the site. You do have Pierce Brosnan and Colin Farrell”.

We're not sure if we want to be on such a shallow website anyway. Or at least we didn't until we saw the women on the site...
